EXTENSION OF 375 MW BELMEKEN-CHAIRA DAM

Project description: The construction of the dam lake of Belmeken led to what is now the highest dam lake on the Balkan Peninsula. With Chaira Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant the largest such structure in southeast Europe and first in the world as regards to having the highest head for a single-stage pumped turbine, this project was one of the most daring and inspiring in our history. 

Construction works involved: Fortification of the dam lake, principal and butress dam, water tower, tunneling and concrete works in a highly slopped district.
